These BCAAs are valine, leucine, and isoleucine. BCAAs are called as such due to their chemical structure of the aforementioned organic compounds. BCAAs are used as medicine by different individuals as well.

Aside from BCAAs being used as medicines, these BCAAs are also utilized by healthcare professionals to address conditions of the brain resulting from diseases of the liver (latent hepatic encephalopathy, chronic, or acute). These can also be utilized for other health conditions and can be used by athletes to boost their performance, reduce fatigue, enhance concentration, and prevent the breakdown of muscles during intense physical activities.

  • Improved management of liver cirrhosis or liver damage that is long term– Experts are still unsure as to the effect of BCAAs on patients with liver damage that is long term also known as liver cirrhosis. Those who took BCAA supplements showed improved functions of the liver and reduced complications as well. It was noted though, that people with advanced liver disease such as cirrhosis, did not display any physical or health improvement in terms of their liver condition (liver cirrhosis).

Side Effects of Using Amino Acid Supplements

Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs are relatively safe intravenously introduced to the body (by IV) by a doctor.

Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs are also relatively safe when consumed orally based on appropriate dosages and instructions. One minor but unlikely side effect is loss of coordination and fatigue. Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs should also be used with caution before or during the conduct of certain physical activities that will require coordination of the motor senses, such as driving. Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs can also lead to problems of the stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and bloating of the stomach. Some rare side effects of BCAA intake include skin whitening and high blood pressure or hypertension.
