These supplements promise a number of different benefits and they are claimed to be relatively safe. But are they really? How are you supposed to use these Amino Acids and what possible side effects are there? In this article let us look at what amino acid supplement uses, their benefits, and their possible side effects.

Amino Acids Supplements: Why They May Be Good For You

There are twenty (20) Amino Acids and out of these twenty, nine (9) are referred to as essential which means the individual needs to acquire the said organic compounds and three (3) are considered as Branched-Chain Amino Acids or BCAAs. These BCAAs are nutrients essential to human health and may be acquired from the different food items that contain proteins such as legumes, dairy products, and meat. These BCAAs are valine, leucine, and isoleucine. BCAAs are called as such due to their chemical structure of the aforementioned organic compounds. BCAAs are used as medicine by different individuals as well.

Aside from BCAAs being used as medicines, these BCAAs are also utilized by healthcare professionals to address conditions of the brain resulting from diseases of the liver (latent hepatic encephalopathy, chronic, or acute). These can also be utilized for other health conditions and can be used by athletes to boost their performance, reduce fatigue, enhance concentration, and prevent the breakdown of muscles during intense physical activities.

Amino Acid Supplement Uses And Health benefits

Listed below are some of the possible health benefits of amino acid supplements along with the other possible effects of Amino Acid supplements:

Improvement of Appetite

A number of health conditions can result in people having reduced appetite. When people take branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) orally may help people in the improvement of appetite and the nutritional value in individuals with the disease of the liver, cancer, and even renal failure.

Brain Function

People who took in Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs orally have been observed to have improved functions of the liver specifically for people afflicted with liver disease which causes poor brain function. Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) supplements can also enhance mental functions and reduce the risk of becoming comatose for individuals suffering from the said medical condition. However, further research is needed to confirm the said health effects. It must be noted, however, that supplementing with BCAAs or branched-chain amino acids did not seem to reduce the risk of death for patients affected with the health condition.

Mental Wellness

People suffering from mania may have reduced symptoms if they take in supplementations with Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs.

Reduced Symptoms Of Tardive Dyskinesia

Similar to those patients with mania, people suffering from the movement disorder known as tardive dyskinesia may have reduced symptoms if they take in BCAA or Branched-chain amino acid supplements.

On the other hand, listed below are some of the possible health benefits of Amino acid supplements that require further research to conclusively be established as conclusively beneficial:

  • Improved or enhanced athletic performance– BCAAs or Branched-Chain Amino Acids may help people in the reduction of fatigue as a result of working out. In most instances, this specific health benefit of BCAAs was observed when taken together with green tea or arginine. However, there is some evidence that disagrees with the said findings. Other research also showed that BCAA supplements can aid the body in reducing soreness of muscles after intense physical activity. Experts noted though, that supplements with BCAAs did not seem to enhance cycling speed, running times, and enhanced strength.
  • Better management of type 2 Diabetes– Taking or consuming BCAA supplements together with carbohydrates (carbs) can enhance the response to insulin of patients suffering from type 2 diabetes. However, it is still unclear if taking supplements with BCAAs can provide similar results for the aforementioned patients.
  • Improved management of liver cirrhosis or liver damage that is long term– Experts are still unsure as to the effect of BCAAs on patients with liver damage that is long term also known as liver cirrhosis. Those who took BCAA supplements showed improved functions of the liver and reduced complications as well. It was noted though, that people with advanced liver disease such as cirrhosis, did not display any physical or health improvement in terms of their liver condition (liver cirrhosis).

Side Effects of Using Amino Acid Supplements

Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs are relatively safe intravenously introduced to the body (by IV) by a doctor.

Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs are also relatively safe when consumed orally based on appropriate dosages and instructions. One minor but unlikely side effect is loss of coordination and fatigue. Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs should also be used with caution before or during the conduct of certain physical activities that will require coordination of the motor senses, such as driving. Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs can also lead to problems of the stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and bloating of the stomach. Some rare side effects of BCAA intake include skin whitening and high blood pressure or hypertension.
