What are Amino Acids?

At a very young age, we already heard about amino acids. And the common knowledge is that amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Well, that’s very correct. But many people don’t know more than that about amino acids. And the truth is that there’s more to it. Let’s have a better look at amino acids.

So our body makes use of 20 different amino acids in making proteins. In Chemistry amino acids are known to have nitrogen molecule which is attached to hydrogen. Out of the 20 different amino acids, there are nine essential amino acids. They are known as essential amino acids because the body can’t produce them. So it’s essential that you take supplements and food products that contain these amino acids. That way your body wouldn’t lack these amino acids.

So what exactly is the importance of amino acids? As building blocks of protein, they are very important. Proteins are important for body growth and also the maintenance of the body. For the body to function properly amino acids are needed. They are important for metabolism, and other functions in the body. At the same time, they are building blocks of bone and muscles.

Amino acids also affect mood and improve sleep. As funny as it sounds, it’s very true. Tryptophan and serotonin are amino acids that help out with it. So if you’re feeling depressed or moody then try taking food products that contain these amino acids.

Also, when it comes to exercise performance amino acids help out a lot. They help boost your performance while exercising. And they also help reduce the pain you feel after exercising. That’s why people take amino acid supplements before and after exercising. Let’s have a look at how it works for pain.

Amino Acids for Pain

As stated above amino acids have a lot of functions. And we benefit from these functions on a day to day basis. One of the most important and valued functions of amino acids is its effect on pain. Amino acids sure have great effects for pain. But you must also bear in mind that not all amino acids are amino acids for pain. Let’s have a look at the amino acids for pain.

Over the years research has been carried out time and time again about the effects of amino acids with regards to pain. And some interesting facts have been found out.
To put it in simple terms, the pain relief system of the body works with amino acids. If there isn’t an adequate amount of amino acids in the body then there would be a problem with this system. Amino acids help produce hormones and neurotransmitters. Some of these are endorphins and ACTH.

Endorphins are well known to be analgesics. Actually, they are known to be the natural pain killer of the body. So when you’re stressed and experiencing pain endorphin levels are usually elevated. Also, ACTH helps out with pain amelioration.

Another good example of amino acid that helps with pain is phenylalanine. This amino acid has been linked to many brain functions. One of which is the pain relief system of the body. There are two forms of phenylalanine. D-Phenylalanine and L-Phenylalanine.  It is more effective when it comes to pain management.

D-Phenylalanine interferes with the breakdown of endorphins. By inhibiting the breakdown of this substance it prolongs its actions. And, endorphin is a natural painkiller. So that means the effect of endorphin in the body would last a lot longer with D-phenylalanine.

The good thing is that its effect is not delayed. Once there’s enough supply of this amino acid to the body you would feel the effect that day. And as time goes on the effect is even more pronounced.
