There are times when you just wish you had listened more to your biology teacher/professor during class. Because then you would have a better idea of the trends that science is taking a turn into. That is some mad science stuff, no offense to the scientists but to us simpletons that are quite farfetch. But not as farfetch as the idea that you can use certain amino acid groups to help you with your dieting. If those extra flabs just won’t go away even if you begged them to. So it seems that our adventure today will take us to amino acids and the wonders they behold.
Points to Ponder About Amino Acids
We learn earlier on in life from our science classes that amino acids are part of what we call the building blocks of life along with proteins in the body paired up with them. But when these proteins are broken down, all that is left are your amino acids. The body uses some amino acids and proteins to bring about growth, repair damaged body tissues, and break down the food we eat.. Further research would also tell us that there are three groups of amino acids; the Essential, Non-essential and Conditional. Each with a different task and origin.
Essential Amino Acids
These are amino acids that are sourced outside the body. It means that they are not produced by the body and we can only get them from the food we eat. In light of the discussion, our body needs 20 different amino acids but 9 of these 20 are part of what experts in the fields would explain, existing and known essential amino acids. These are the following: lysine, isoleucine, threonine, valine, histidine, phenylalanine, methionine, tryptophan, and leucine. Therefore it is a must to have a fairly well-balanced diet to be able to get the needs of our body, especially when it comes to the essential amino acids. Eggs, poultry, and animal meat are particularly where these essential amino acids can be found.
Non-Essential Amino Acids
The term non-essential amino acids do not connote that these amino acids are indeed unimportant rather that they are simply on the opposite lanes of the essential amino acids. Non-essential amino acids are already inside of you. They are locally produced by your body and so there is no need to outsource them from food. Examples of these non-essential amino acids are as follows: glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine, proline, cysteine, asparagine, glutamine, arginine, tyrosine, alanine, and serine.
Conditional Amino Acids
There are non-essential amino acids though that are considered to be conditional. Conditional in the relative terms that they are only needed during times of extreme stress and sickness. Those conditional amino acids are as follows: tyrosine, ornithine, proline, glutamine, cysteine, arginine, glycine, and serine.
Amino Acids For Weight Loss: Is It Effective?
The obsession of losing weight has had its grip on the world ever since the world has learned a hard lesson that eating too much won’t go on without its consequences or that fat and chubby are not so cute when you get old. I am not into body shaming what I mean is you yourself get a sense of how your body should weigh in relation to your height and age. Besides being heavy makes you feel groggy and lazy and that doesn’t fair well when it comes to working. And so it was like the race to the moon of who can get the pounds off quicker, faster and more effectively. Some choose to sweat it out, to go on extreme diets, to have them surgically removed and some even had the idea to use amino acids for this purpose. This then begs the question, is it really possible to lose weight using amino acids put into forms of supplements? If so, what are the best amino acids for losing weight?
What’s The Best Amino Acids For Weight Loss?
It may seem that the best amino acid for weight loss is a blast from the past. A study conducted in the 1990s about what they call Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) like Valine, Leucine, and Isoleucine which along with a very low-calorie diet were found to have promoted weight loss. This was observed in some wrestlers who used BCAA in their diet. The wrestler show progressive results with their weight loss programs when they used BCAA along with their strict diets. But the study does not show any significant connection between those elite fighters’ weight loss and the usage of BCAA along with their strict diets. It seems like a dead-end for some. However, a different study made in 2017 where a group of mice was given a diet that lacked the BCAAs has shown leanness in the physique. In the said study the weight loss and lean physical features of the mice were credited to lessening food intake that naturally has BCAAs in them and viola the result ended up lowering the test subjects metabolic rate. Indeed the study works like magic for mice but the same cannot be said for humans. We can only hold our breaths in anticipation.
But BCAAs should not be the only amino acid considered and credited for its contribution to weight loss. We also have phenylalanine to be a contender as the best amino acid for weight loss. This particular amino acid was tagged for its alleged ability to suppress appetite. You can’t gain weight if you don’t eat and you won’t eat if you’re not hungry. It kind of makes sense, right? The focus group that volunteered to test the theory out took a dose of phenylalanine before eating. They reportedly ate fewer calories and have claimed that they feel full already. It is quite something. If the results of the study were to be accurate and true to this day it could help a lot of people who have a major problem of keeping the pounds off because they struggle to keep away from the food. The struggle is real so imagine the relief on these people’s faces. However, the evidence of phenylalanine being able to effectively suppress appetite was from a very old study in the 1990s much like that of the other study about BCAAs. No further study was conducted since then that can prove the efficacy of both amino acids.
How About Protein Supplements?
There are some experts who suggest using substitutes like whey as protein supplements in order to lose weight by decreasing fat in the body significantly and adding to the leanness of muscles. Others also suggest supplements like the FDA approved drugs that block fats in the body. All in all, supplementing just to get the pounds off is not a decision to be done in haste. One must be fully aware of the consequences that lie beneath the promises of losing weight easily and effectively as their campaign adds would say.
The best amino acid for weight loss might not be the only key solution. We must all first be aware of why we have gained this excessive weight to be able to know what sort of measures we can take the weight off of our bodies. Take note I said excessive weight. It won’t do us good if we take things into extremes and consider ourselves fat just because someone said so.
You have excessive weight when you exceed what your body’s supposed to eat. Going back, it would do us good if we try to do it the natural way first by proper diet and exercise. The supplement can and may come into play when our fitness coach tell us that there is no other way. But I doubt the likelihood of fitness coaches telling someone that there is no other way. The odds of that are way off.
Consult a doctor first before jumping into the supplement bandwagon. We might not be aware of the risks these may have with them. Bottom line is, you won’t ever have to worry about losing weight if you keep everything you eat in moderation. I sound like a high and mighty hypocrite but that is just the trick to eat. Eat right to have a healthy life. Eat right and never worry about the weighing scale.
