Histidine is just one (1) out of the twenty-one (21) amino acids that compose the human body proteins. Amino acids are the building blocks of these proteins and they can be grouped as essential and nonessential. Essential Amino acids are those amino acids that are acquired through a person’s diet since the body is unable to create this amino acid on its own. Nonessential Amino Acids, on the other hand, are those that the body can produce for its own use. Histidine is classified as an essential amino acid. Numerous studies show that histidine deficiency may lead to numerous adverse health effects and medical conditions. In this article, let us explore histidine for erectile dysfunction, its effectiveness, other uses, and health benefits.

Histidine: A Brief Backgrounder

But why is histidine so important? This is due to the fact that Histidine is needed to ensure that tissues and muscles are protected from radiation and heavy metal damage, promote the growth of tissues, and help improve the production of red blood cells or RBCs. However, the primary function or benefit of histidine is that it can form sheaths of myelin which are surrounding layers that protect the nerve and makes the said nerves faster in terms of brain signal transmission. Tests conducted on both human and animal subjects revealed that those who maintained regular levels of hemoglobin were primarily aided by the presence of histidine. These regular levels of hemoglobin also ensured that blood flow and oxygen throughout the circulatory system are efficiently transported from the bloodstream and tissues to the different organs such as the lungs. Histidine is also an important part of carnosine which is a form of antioxidant that can slow down the advancement of certain degenerative diseases and can help prevent the buildup of artery plaque. Histidine has also been shown to enhance the performance of muscles during strenuous exercise or physical activities.

What can Histidine do for Erectile Dysfunction?

Histidine may play a critical role in erectile dysfunction as one study suggests. This is because histidine is converted to histamine in the body. Histamine primarily acts as a neurotransmitter that can aid in digestion, immunity, and basic sexual functions such as having an erection. In fact, another study showed that histamine has an erection promoting property due to the presence of certain components such as its H2 and H3 receptor activation. This means that the supplementation of Histidine which will eventually be converted to histamine can help improve and even diagnose certain erectile issues or concerns.

What Other Health Benefits does Histidine have?

Aside from the above-mentioned health benefit of Histidine for erectile dysfunction, histidine has other health benefits for the human body. Enumerated below are some of these health benefits:

1. Histidine can help protect the heart

A certain solution that contains histidine called a Bretschneider’s histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate solution can help in heart protection. In a study that was conducted in thirty (30) patients who were undergoing heart surgery and treated with the aforecited solution, it was observed that there was a decrease in the occurrence of heartbeats that is irregular, the need to use drugs, and the possibility of staying longer in the ICU or intensive care unit.

2. May aid in the management of hypertension or high blood pressure

Evidence suggests that histidine can reduce high blood pressure or hypertension. This was observed in around ninety-two (92) patients with cardiovascular or heart disease.

3. Contains antioxidants

Histidine supplements have been shown to reduce stress caused by oxidation. This was observed in a study conducted involving women who are obese and histidine has been shown to have possible effects. A different study also showed that for obese women, increasing the number of levels of histidine can significantly reduce the damage brought about by oxidation.  This establishes histidine’s role as a possible key antioxidant for individuals who want to improve on their health.

4. It can aid people or patients with Type  2 diabetes

A study conducted in China showed that individuals who took in lower levels of histidine were more likely to be morbidly obese. Increased intake of histidine was also shown to have significantly reduced BMI or the body mass index, blood pressure, and waist circumference. The conversion of histidine to histamine and its regular supplementation has also been shown to revise its test subjects’ eating or feeding patterns. In addition, animal test subjects also showed that rats who were given histidine reduced levels of accumulation of fats and lessened frequency of feeding.

5. Histidine may protect the skin

Histidine is the main component needed in the production of urocanic acid, a substance that is collected in the skin cells of humans and can help absorb ultraviolet or UV radiation. As such, histidine can help protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays earning the moniker of being a natural sunscreen. Certain skin conditions were also addressed by histidine supplementation such as atopic dermatitis. In fact, patients with atopic dermatitis who were given histidine greatly improved their condition and reported feeling much better. Another study conducted on animal test subjects showed that histidine supplementation improved the UV ultraviolet protection of their skin through increased production of urocanic acids.
